Week 15 – 150 Days of Praise: A Journey through the Psalms

psalm 95-1

Psalms 95-101.

I must confess that as the end of my journey through the psalms draws near its end, I find myself a little saddened. It has been quite a journey of discovery into the heart of King David and how one who was noted as being “after God’s own heart” expressed himself and his experiences. While reading this week’s set of psalms, I found that several of the verses in them answered 5 questions. I hope that the answers are as encouraging for you as they were for me!

Question 1: How solid is your salvation?

Talk about a deep question! The verses that stood out as the answers to this question were as follows:

Psalm 95:1: Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. [emphasis added]
How much more solid can it be than the Rock?

Psalm 99:8: You answered them, O Lord our God;
You were to them God-Who-Forgives, [emphasis added]
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.

Question 2: How should we come before the King or respond to Him?

Psalm 95:2, 6 & 8:
2 – Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
6 – Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
8 – “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

Psalm 96:1-3 and 8-12:
1-3 – Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
3 Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.

8-12 – Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
9 Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns;
The world also is firmly established,
It shall not be moved;
He shall judge the peoples righteously.”
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;
Let the sea roar, and all its fullness;
12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it.

Psalm 97:8 & 12
8 – Zion hears and is glad,
And the daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments, O LORD.

12 – Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.

Psalm 98:1
Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.

Psalm 99:5, 7b & 9
5 – Exalt the LORD our God,
And worship at His footstool—
He is holy.

7b – They kept His testimonies and the ordinance He gave them.

9 – Exalt the Lord our God,
And worship at His holy hill;
For the Lord our God is holy.

Psalm 100:1-4
1-4 – Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
2 Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
3 Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

Psalm 101:1-8
I will sing of mercy and justice;
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.
2 I will behave wisely in a perfect way.
Oh, when will You come to me?
I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
3 I will set nothing wicked before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not cling to me.
4 A perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will not know wickedness.
5 Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor,
Him I will destroy;
The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart,
Him I will not endure.
6 My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land,
That they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a perfect way,
He shall serve me.
7 He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who tells lies shall not continue in my presence.
8 Early I will destroy all the wicked of the land,
That I may cut off all the evildoers from the city of the Lord.

Question 3: How mighty and great is the Lord God?

Psalm 96:4-6 & 13
4-6 – 4 For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
6 Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

13 – For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.
He shall judge the world with righteousness,
And the peoples with His truth.

Psalm 97:1-7 & 9
1-7 – The Lord reigns;
Let the earth rejoice;
Let the multitude of isles be glad!
2 Clouds and darkness surround Him;
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
3 A fire goes before Him,
And burns up His enemies round about.
4 His lightnings light the world;
The earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The heavens declare His righteousness,
And all the peoples see His glory.
7 Let all be put to shame who serve carved images,
Who boast of idols.
Worship Him, all you gods.

9 – For You, Lord, are most high above all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods.

Psalm 99:1&2
1&2 – The Lord reigns;
Let the peoples tremble!
He dwells between the cherubim;
Let the earth be moved!
2 The Lord is great in Zion,
And He is high above all the peoples.

Psalm 100:5: For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

Question 4: How does He respond to constant disobedience and unrepentance?

Psalm 95:9-11
9-11 – When your fathers tested Me;
They tried Me, though they saw My work.
10 For forty years I was grieved with that generation,
And said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts,
And they do not know My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’”

Psalm 99:8: You answered them, O Lord our God;
You were to them God-Who-Forgives,
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.

Question 5: How does He respond to His people or on their behalf?

Psalm 97:10b&c & 11
10b&c – He preserves the souls of His saints;
He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.

11 – Light is sown for the righteous,
And gladness for the upright in heart.
